What's the Haps Wednesday {Decorating the Tree}

One of our holiday traditions is to decorate our Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving.

For years, I've wanted a beautiful themed tree with white lights.  You know the kind--all matchy-matchy downtown department store window worthy.

We pull out all of our old, worn ornaments that build our rag-tag tree.  Someone tells a story behind an ornament.  Then another.  And another.  Another remember when....  Another this one came from....

It's all embarrassingly Hallmarky.

At that point I know I will never have a matchy-matchy sophisticated tree because I can't give up the blue glass ball with my son's tiny preschool fingerprints in silver paint (he's almost 13).  Or the huge popsicle stick and pipecleaner reindeer he made years ago.  Or the salt dough ornament in the shape of a star--that he painted to look like Patrick Star when he was in his Spongebob phase.

I do sort of have a theme going though.  Over the years, I've collected angel ornaments.

It was an accidental collection, but I like it.

Some of my angel ornaments are inexpensive--dollar store finds.  The blocky one is from my grandma.

This one was a craft fair find.

The straw one also from my grandma.

From a co-worker

She's a Hallmark collectible from my husband.  2001 Hallmark One Little Angel.  I like her metal wings.

This one in blue is handmade.  I stole her from my mother in law's garage sale table.  I'll probably go to hell for stealing an angel.

This is one of my favorites.  Another collectible.  And another one from my grandma.  1995 Avon Birthstone Angel--September.  She's prettier than my crummy picture lets on.

And my favorite.  Most favorite of all.  And the oldest angel I have...the oldest ornament I have.  She's not a collectible that I know of, but I've had her since I was 3 or 4.  My Aunt Pam (my Godmother/nanny) gave her to me.

Her head and wings have been glued and reglued.  But she always gets a spot near the top front of the tree.

My tree will always be more Island of Misfit Toys than Martha Stewart.  I'm ok with that.

Do you collect ornaments?  Decorate an elegant tree or a patchwork one like me?

  1. What a fabulous blog post Michelle! Your tree will be much nicer than any Martha Stewart could ever produce. Yours will glow from love and sweet memories.... hers not!

  2. What a beautiful collection of angels! I love them all, especially the craft fair and straw Angels. My grandmother and mom enjoy angel ornaments as well and have given me some beautiful ones so that I have started a small collection of my own too :)

  4. I have one that was my Dad's when he was a young boy. I always put it somewhere on the tree where I know it will be safe and will continue to grace our tree for many years.

Thanks for sharing your favorites with us.

Remember- whenever a bell rings- an angel gets it wings! ( from my favorite movie- It's a wonderful life)

  5. I know what you mean, Michelle - there are so many ornaments I love from years gone by, my tree is never going to be matchy-matchy either! I still have the angel for the top of the tree that my late Dad bought for me when I was 2 years old as well as an ornament I made in Kindergarten. And that's before we get to the ornaments my son made! Love your angel ornaments - they are beautiful :-)
